Why take a private taxi to Burgas when you have a pet?

Sofia and Burgas sit at opposite ends of Bulgaria, and the public options for crossing that distance are not designed around animals. A coach takes longer and leaves your dog among dozens of strangers for the whole journey. A domestic flight means the stress of an airport, a crate check and perhaps a hold for a larger dog. The train is slower still. With a private car you leave from your own front door, the only people around your dog or cat are your family and the driver, and you stop when the animal needs it rather than when a timetable allows.

This route is popular with people who have just landed at Sofia Airport with a pet and want to reach the coast the same day, with families relocating from the capital to the seaside, and with Sofia residents heading to a summer flat near Burgas for a few weeks.

What is the drive like for a dog or cat?

The Trakia motorway runs from Sofia over the hills near Vakarel, down into the Thracian plain, past Pazardzhik, around Plovdiv, then on past Chirpan, Stara Zagora, Nova Zagora and the turn for Yambol, before passing Karnobat and descending to Burgas. It is a modern, mostly straight road, which suits animals prone to car sickness better than a winding mountain route. The drive is long, though, and planning the breaks makes the difference between a calm dog on arrival and a restless one.

  • First break near Plovdiv. Roughly an hour and a half out of Sofia is a natural point to stretch legs at one of the fuel stations along the motorway.
  • Second break after Stara Zagora. For young, older or anxious dogs a second short stop in the second half of the journey keeps them settled until Burgas.
  • Keep the lead on. Motorway service areas have constant traffic. Even a well-trained dog should stay on the lead from the moment the door opens.
  • Walk on grass, not tarmac. In July and August the car parks across the plain get hot enough to hurt paws by mid-morning.
  • Never leave the dog alone in the car, not even for a minute in the shade.

Is the trip too long for a cat?

Four hours sounds like a lot, but most cats handle it better than a shorter trip with several changes of vehicle. The key is to keep the cat in its carrier for the whole journey – do not open it at the stops, however much it complains. A cat that escapes at a service area beside a motorway is extremely hard to catch. Put an absorbent pad and a familiar blanket inside, place the carrier on the seat or floor next to you so it cannot slide, and talk to the cat quietly. Many cats protest loudly for the first twenty minutes and then fall asleep until the outskirts of Burgas.

When is the best time to travel?

In summer the Thracian plain is one of the hottest parts of Bulgaria, and the middle of the day is the hardest time for a dog to step out of an air-conditioned car. We work around the clock, so an early start – leaving Sofia at five or six in the morning – gets you to the coast before the worst heat. An evening departure works too, as long as your accommodation can let you in late. In winter, the stretch near Vakarel can bring fog or snow, so allow some spare time if you need to arrive by a fixed hour.

What should you know about Burgas with a pet?

Burgas is a working port city rather than a resort, which makes it easier with a dog than the busiest beach towns. Its Sea Garden is a long park on the seafront, with shady paths that are pleasant for a walk on the lead after hours in the car. Beach rules for dogs vary along the Bulgarian coast and depend on the specific beach and the season – many beaches have restrictions in summer – so ask locally or at your accommodation before taking your dog onto the sand.

If you are staying in a hotel or a rented flat, confirm in writing that pets are accepted before you pay for the stay. Policies differ widely, some places accept only small dogs or cats, and we do not book accommodation for you. Our guide to travelling to the seaside with a dog (in Bulgarian) has more practical tips.

Which vehicle should you book?

  • Sedan – up to 4 passengers with a cat or small dog in a soft carrier and normal luggage.
  • Minivan – for a large dog in a rigid crate, or a family with several suitcases.
  • Van – for groups of up to 8, more than one animal, or a household moving to the coast.

Our large fleet has sedans, minivans, vans and S- and E-class cars. Child seats are free. Tell us the size of the crate when you book so the right vehicle is sent.

What are our rules for pets?

We carry dogs and cats only together with their owner; we cannot transport an animal on its own. The crate or carrier is provided by you (Terms and Conditions, item 50.4). Mention when booking that you travel with a pet, what kind and how big, and the dispatcher will confirm the vehicle and the final price. You pay after the ride – no prepayment.

How many stops do you make on the four-hour drive?

Usually one or two short stops at fuel stations on the Trakia motorway, around Plovdiv and again after Stara Zagora. Tell the driver if your dog needs a break sooner.
