Why a private car to the north coast with a pet?

Balchik, Kavarna and Shabla lie at the far north-eastern corner of Bulgaria, one of the furthest corners of the country from Sofia. There is no direct train, and the coach means a change in Varna and many hours with your dog among strangers. A private transfer starts at the arrivals hall or your front door in Sofia, stops when the animal needs it and ends at the gate of your house. That is why this route suits people who live on the north coast all year or spend the summer there, families relocating with their animals, and travellers landing in Sofia with a dog or cat who would rather not change to a second flight or a coach.

Six hours with a dog: how to split the drive

The driver chooses the road on the day, through northern Bulgaria or via the Trakia motorway and the coast, depending on traffic and roadworks. We therefore plan breaks by time rather than by a particular fuel station.

  • First break after about two hours – a short walk on the lead, water and a toilet stop.
  • Second break around half-way – a slightly longer walk for young or restless dogs.
  • Third break before Varna – after it there is about an hour left along the coast to Balchik and Kavarna.
  • Clip the lead on before the door opens. Roadside car parks are busy; even a calm dog should not jump out loose.
  • Never leave the animal alone in the car, not even for a minute in the shade.

If your dog is elderly or has a health condition, ask your vet beforehand whether a six- to seven-hour drive is right for it.

Water, food and walks on the way

  • Keep water and a bowl in the cabin, not in the boot. A collapsible bowl takes almost no space.
  • Feed lightly and early. A big meal just before setting off often ends in car sickness.
  • Take a long walk in the morning – a tired dog sleeps through most of the trip.
  • Line the crate with an absorbent pad and bring a blanket that smells of home.

Crate or carrier

Dogs and cats travel in a crate or carrier that you provide (Terms and Conditions, item 50.4). It should be big enough for the animal to stand, turn round and lie down. Tell us its rough size and how big the dog is when you book, so that we send a vehicle where the crate sits steadily and is not squeezed between suitcases. If your pet has just flown in, the airline crate usually works for the car as well.

Which vehicle should you book?

  • Sedan – up to 4 passengers with a cat or small dog in a soft carrier and normal luggage.
  • Minivan – up to 6 passengers; for a large dog in a rigid crate or a family with luggage for a whole summer.
  • Van – up to 8 passengers; for more than one animal or a household moving to the coast.

The group has a large fleet of sedans, minivans and vans. Child seats are free, and the dispatcher confirms the vehicle and the final price.

Landing at Sofia Airport with your pet

Give us your flight number and we track it; if the flight is late we wait without a time limit and at no extra cost. After a flight most dogs need a walk soon, so the first stop can be shortly after the airport. Our drivers speak English, and you can book in English by phone or on Viber and WhatsApp. More about the airport pick-up: Sofia Airport transfer with a dog or cat.

Arriving in Balchik, Kavarna or Shabla

We drive to the exact address – a house, a flat, a hotel or a villa outside town. If it is in a village or on an unpaved lane, tell us in advance so the driver knows the way in. Confirm in writing that your accommodation accepts pets before you pay for the stay; we do not book accommodation. For beach rules for dogs, ask your host or the local municipality. Our guide to the Black Sea coast with a dog has more practical tips.

Our rules for pets

We carry dogs and cats only together with their owner or a person looking after them; we cannot transport an animal on its own. Mention when booking that you travel with a pet, what kind and how big, and the dispatcher will confirm the vehicle and the price. No prepayment – you pay the driver after the ride.
